| A catastrophic earthquake (7.0 Mw) hit Haiti on January 12, 2010, with an epicenter near Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake; The Haitian Government reported that an estimated 230,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless. They also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings had collapsed or were severely damaged. When first hearing of this news, our hearts broke. We had no communication with our team there, their condition, or what we could do to help. We could only look to Jesus. After many days of continuous prayer, we finally were able to make contact. We had a sense of direction not to make emotional decisions, but smart biblical ones. We decided to start an earthquake relief program named Boxes of Hope. We collected boxes and luggage with supplies that families could use. Many times, we do not know why these things happen. However, God always reminded us when a foundation is not properly laid, He must tear it down and rebuild it on the foundation of Jesus Christ. We pray that God uses Boxes of Hope in a mighty way to restore hope to the people of Haiti. |
